Summer Shopping Spree

I've refrained from going bananas for the last several months in an effort to conserve funds for the important things in life... like OU football and gas for the boat.  That was going well... until yesterday.  I totally fell off the penny-pinching wagon.  Check out my loot!

How'd I do?

And which dress from ModCloth do you like best?  Weddings coming up...

Happy Friday!

My New Favorite Dinner

Even I can make this taste good!

Easiest Chicken Dish Ever: Onion Chicken

1) Preheat oven to 350.

2) Take large baking dish and fill with about 1 inch of water.

3) Slice an onion (like you are going to put it on a burger) and lay the slices flat in the water.

4)  Place boneless skinless chicken breasts on top of the onion.

5) Generously season the top side of your chicken breasts. (I use a lot of salt and pepper, garlic salt, lemony something, and paprika.  You can use whatever spices you want.)

6) Bake at 350 for 45ish minutes.

While it bakes, let's start working on the...

Easiest Side Dish Ever: Spinach and New Potatoes

1) Cut some new potatoes in to fourths and throw them in some boiling water.  (I cut them in halves, but they cook faster if you cut them in to smaller pieces.  They are also easier to eat that way. :)

2) Throw about a table spoon of butter and some baby spinach in a mixing bowl / serving dish.  (These are the same thing in our house.)

3) Add the potatoes when they finished cooking and ready to eat. (The potatoes melt the butter and cook the spinach to the perfect consistency.)  Salt and pepper, of course.

4) ENJOY!

I've gotten in to the habit of making this on Sundays with four chicken breasts.  We eat two for dinner, and then we have two for sandwiches or leftovers as is for the week.  It keeps pretty well, and the chicken is even yummy on a sandwich cold.

Get it!

Fancy Hats

If you know me, you know I fancy myself sort of a princess sometimes.  You probably also know that I've got weddings on the brain.  Two of my favorite things merge this weekend...  Kate Middleton gets to marry a PRINCE!

If that isn't fairytale enough, check out that rock!

The new princess is so adorable!  She looks JUST like my friend, Christine!  (Hint hint, wink wink, nudge nudge. My birthday is coming up, Tine.  Just sayin...)

My genius Aunts have decided to wear fancy hats to work on Friday to celebrate the Royal Wedding, and I think this is a fantastic idea!  Let's check out some of Princess Kate's fantabulous hats...

So fun!  I think we need more excuses to wear big hats in the US.  I mean, besides the Kentucky Derby, what is there??  Apparently, there are royal English weddings...?

On that note, I'll be sure to post pics of the Zumwalts' fancy hats on Friday.

Here's to the fanciest hat of all!  See you in my dreams...

Lent in Review

Hope everyone is enjoying Easter Monday!

This year for Lent, I gave up several things:
 Fast food

Candy

... and the F word.

Lent as PZ understands it:  We sacrifice to recognize the ultimate sacrifice that was made for us.  However, I believe that we also make sacrifices to better ourselves, whether that be physically, mentally, spiritually... God wants us taking care of our bodies and minds, and Lent is a great way to work on that, as well as give thanks for the life of His only son.

Lenten sidenotes:
  • I know that Sundays aren't included in the 40 days of lent, but I try not to indulge then either.
  • I give this year's Lenten effort a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10.  Nothing to brag about.  While honoring God and the church by making sacrifices should be motivation enough for me not to cheat, apparently I need a little more help...

Last night at Easter Mass when the collection basket came to me, I realized that I didn't have any cash, as usual.  Then I had an idea. Next year, my sacrifices will have a dollar amount attached.  When I cheat on one, the corresponding dollar amount goes in a jar. For example...

Fast food = $20 per cheat.  As I see it, this one is pretty easy to avoid.
Candy = $5 per cheat.  This is also easy to avoid, but I should have counted "after dinner treats" from restaurants.
F word = $1 per cheat.  Considering this is pretty much my favorite word in the English language, this is a HUGE fee.

This year would have looked something like this...

 Lent 2011 total:
(Also, I think if alcohol is the cause of my cheating, my fine should be doubled.)
$120(YIKES!)
+

$20 (at least)
+
$100 (given my alcohol-induced cheating rule)
=
$240 big ones for the Big Guy

I think the Newman Center would have been VERY thankful.

How did Lent go for you??

My Oma and Opa

An uneventful post to go with my uneventful day: You can learn everything about my grandparents (Oma and Opa) by taking a gander at their upstairs spare bedroom.
1) Opa is a physician.
Also learned, Opa doesn't mind if his medical school diploma is in a $2 frame, and he thinks the guest bedroom (which is NEVER seen by guests, mind you) is an appropriate place to hang it.

2) Oma is as staunch a Republican as you have ever met.

3) They don't throw ANYTHING away.

4) They have fantastic taste.

How great is this quilt???

Unfortunately, it is reversible... YIKES!

And this lamp?? I can't WAIT until I have a room to put it in.  I think it is so fantastically retro!

This is only 1 room of their house.  Think what you might find if you explored the whole thing!

Full story as to why I was taking random pics of my grandparent's guest room:  For President's Day weekend, Opa and I decided to make the drive to Crested Butte for a few days of snow skiing.  Dad was already up there, so it was just me, Opa, and Gracie Doll... for 14 hours... each way.  I learned LOTS about my family, and Opa was wildly entertaining (as always), but this post isn't about the adventure of a drive we had.  This is about the night before we left.

Dad and Opa thought it would be best if I stayed at Oma and Opa's house the night before we were to leave so that we could get on the road promptly at our normal time... 4:15am.  They went to bed at normal grandparent time (8pm sharp), and, after I finished my book, I was left with nothing to do.  So I started taking pictures of all the weird stuff in their guest room.  And by weird, I mean awesome.

Oma's and Opa's three children:  Kurt, Gretchen, and Kristin.
(These depictions are so far off that the painter could have been painting an entirely different family... which is probably why the paining is in the guest room.)
